Optometry Services: A Requirement for Quality Education

Did you know that 80% of a child’s learning is through the eyes? And according to the Kenneth H. Cooper Institute, up to 60% of “problem learners” are believed to actually suffer from undetected or untreated vision problems.

Healthy vision directly impacts a student’s ability to learn, participate, and succeed in school. As research shows, many students struggling academically, experiencing headaches, having difficulty concentrating, or showing behavioral concerns are actually dealing with an undiagnosed vision problem.

For many, barriers outside of a student’s control like transportation, cost, missed work for parents, and lack of access to providers makes it difficult – or even impossible – for the student to receive the care, diagnosis, and solutions needed to live a quality life and succeed at their studies.

This is why we offer full vision services right at Springfield High. Our vision services provide students with the opportunity to schedule a general well check, assess eye injuries, and the option to try on and order glasses on sight.

We’re so grateful to have Dr. Cindy Ahern, Optometrist at the SBHC, who comes to us with decades of experience on our team to serve the students of Springfield City Schools and their families!

Adding Dental in the Fall of 2026

After opening the Michael H. and Pauline D. Chakers Dental Care Center at our Main location, we quickly realized the need for quality, affordable, reliable dental services in our community is much higher than originally anticipated, especially for our students.

To assist in meeting the needs of our community, we are excited to announce the expansion of dental services right at Springfield High School, with the addition of Dr. Lexi Dunnels, Pediatric Dentist, to our team. Stay tuned for an official opening date in late August 2026!

Increasing Accessibility with Mobile Services

While we are grateful for our dedicated space at the High School, we recognize students at other buildings within the district need the same level of access to care. This is why we provide all of our services in a mobile capacity to the elementary and middle schools throughout the city. In the fall, we will be offering sports physicals to all middle schools throughout the district.

Why the SBHC?

Because access to healthcare shouldn’t negatively impact a student’s ability to succeed academically. The Health Center at Springfield High is the perfect additional layer of accessible support for students to receive care. We won’t be a replacement for someone’s family doctor, but we are a convenient resource that can work right alongside them. Our goal is to make it easier for students to stay healthy, in school, and ready to learn.

Being located in the high school means parents of high school students won’t need to worry about transporting their child to the doctor and missing work. Additionally, students throughout the district can avoid long wait times, as most medical appointments can be scheduled within a few days at a convenient, centralized location. Parents are always included in their child’s care, and services are provided with privacy, compassion, and respect.

Most importantly, the families we serve know we care deeply about the well-being of every student. Sometimes quick access to care at school can make all the difference — whether it’s helping a student feel better sooner, addressing a concern before it becomes more serious, or simply making healthcare more accessible for busy families.

How to Access the SBHC

Our office is fully operational year-round, even when school is not in session, aside from a few days to allow for deep cleaning and maintenance.

Currently, there are two ways to access care at the SBHC:

  1. Parents, guardians, students, and staff can call us directly to schedule an appointment at 937-717-2578.
  2. If a student is ill at school, they can go to the school nurse who will coordinate with the child’s parent or guardian and the SBHC to schedule.

Healthcare for Everyone

Just like all other Rocking Horse locations, we will never turn someone away because of the inability to pay for a service or appointment. If you are in need of additional resources to get your family the medical care they need, with your permission, we will connect you with our Patient Advocacy Team, who will be happy to assist in any way they can.

Call & Schedule Today!

If your child is due for vaccinations or will need a physical in order to take part in a fall sport, call our office today to schedule an appointment at 937-717-2578.
