Cold vs. Flu: What’s the Difference?
Knowing whether you have a cold or the flu can help you make the right decisions for your care, avoid unnecessary antibiotics, and protect others.
- Colds are usually milder, with symptoms like a runny nose, sore throat, and mild fatigue.
- Flu symptoms tend to hit harder and faster. Think: high fever, body aches, chills, and exhaustion that can knock you off your feet.

Don't Forget to Get Your Flu Shot
Where to Go
Flu shots are widely available across Clark and Madison counties:
- Rocking Horse Community Health Center: Stop by any of our locations
- Clark County Combined Health District
- Local Pharmacies: Many are covered by insurance (call ahead to confirm)
When to Go
The best time to get your flu shot is in early fall, but it’s never too late. Getting vaccinated at any point in flu season helps protect you, your family, and your community.
Remember: flu vaccines don’t just protect you. They help protect the most vulnerable members of our community: babies, older adults, and people with chronic illnesses.
Do Your Part: Stop the Spread
Even small actions make a big difference in keeping everyone healthy.
- Stay Home When Sick: Keep yourself (and your kids) home from work, school, and activities if you’re feeling unwell.
- Be Mindful During the Holidays:
- Swap kisses for side hugs or high-fives when greeting loved ones.
- Avoid kissing babies and toddlers or being in their faces. Their immune systems are still developing, and you could pass along something without knowing it.
- Follow the Fever-Free Rule: Wait at least 24 hours after a fever breaks on its own (without medication) before heading back into public spaces.
- Try Grocery & Errand Hacks:
- Use grocery delivery or porch drop-off if available.
- No delivery in your area? Ask a family member or friend to run errands for you and leave items on your porch. Which leads us to our next recommendation…

Build Your Village (and Be a Villiager!)
Illness doesn't have to mean isolation. If someone you know is under the weather, give them a call and see how you can safely help:
- Run to the store for them
- Pick up a prescription
- Drop off a home cooked meal
- Offer childcare or a ride to practice for their kids
And don’t forget that community care works both ways! When you’re the one sick, don’t be afraid to ask for help.
